A female officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has lost her life after she was struck by a patrol vehicle during a simulation exercise in Abuja.
The tragic incident occurred in the course of a coordinated show-of-force drill in the nation’s capital, drawing shock from colleagues and onlookers.
Confirming the development on Saturday, the Corps Public Relations Officer, Afolabi Babawale, described the occurrence as an unfortunate accident.
Video footage that later circulated on social media captured the moment the officer was hit as the operational vehicle negotiated a turn during the exercise. The vehicle reportedly halted immediately after the impact.
Fellow operatives and bystanders were seen rushing to the scene to rescue her from beneath the vehicle before emergency responders evacuated her for urgent medical attention. She was, however, pronounced dead despite efforts to save her life.
Reacting, Babawale said the Corps had commenced internal processes in line with its procedures following the loss.
“It is true that we lost a personnel during the simulation exercise. Our senior officers are already on their way to the residence of the deceased to commiserate with the family,” he stated.
He added that the agency would release a detailed statement to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident and outline further steps being taken.
As of the time of filing this report, the identity of the deceased officer had yet to be officially made public.
