Former Anambra State Governor and the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, has declared that no individual or group can prevent him from travelling to any part of the country, of insisting that Nigerians have a constitutional right to move freely.
Obi made the statement while reacting to a recent incident in Benin City and comments on social media cautioning him against visiting certain parts of the country.
He spoke during a visit to Peter University in Achina, Anambra State.
The former governor maintained that, as a Nigerian citizen, he was entitled to travel anywhere within the country without intimidation.
“I am a Nigerian and I have the right to go to any part of this country. Nobody can take away that constitutional right,” he said.
Obi also disclosed that he recently visited Rivers State despite warnings advising him not to make the trip, explaining that he honoured an earlier invitation shortly after the incident in Benin.
Speaking on his political ambition, the former presidential candidate reaffirmed his plan to contest the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the African Democratic Congress.
He said his aspiration was not driven by desperation for power but by a desire to see the country function effectively.
“I am not desperate to become Nigeria’s President, but I am determined to see a Nigeria that works,” he said.
Obi stressed that the country required meaningful reforms that would expand opportunities for citizens and strengthen democratic institutions.
According to him, Nigeria should be a country where individuals can succeed based on merit rather than personal connections.
He also explained that his decision to leave the Labour Party for the African Democratic Congress followed internal leadership disputes within the party and concerns over how court rulings relating to the crisis were handled.
The former governor said the developments influenced his decision to move to another political platform ahead of the next electoral cycle. Sp
