Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and ex-Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party and defected to the African Democratic Congress.
Tambuwal said his decision was prompted by the prolonged internal crisis, leadership tussles and deepening divisions within the opposition party.
The former governor made the announcement in a statement shared on his X handle in the early hours of Thursday, noting that he had already submitted a formal resignation letter to his ward chairman before officially joining the ADC with his supporters and political allies.
He stated, “After deep reflection and wide consultations, I have formally resigned my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party and communicated my decision in writing to my ward chairman.”
Tambuwal acknowledged the significant role the PDP played in his political journey, which saw him serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives and complete two terms as governor of Sokoto State.
However, he explained that the internal challenges within the party had made it increasingly difficult for him to remain a member.
According to him, the lingering crisis, leadership disagreements and widening cracks within the party had weakened the unity and direction that once defined the PDP.
Tambuwal added that his decision to join the ADC was based on his conviction that the party offers a more credible platform for democratic growth and national development.
He noted that Nigeria requires a stronger political platform built on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness and a firm commitment to development.
The former governor also reaffirmed his commitment to democratic values, justice and national unity.
