Benin Queen may be ousted after Peller’s palace visit

The Benin Traditional Council has indicated that a Queen could face removal from the palace following an incident in which social media influencer Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, popularly called Peller, gained unauthorized entry into the Oba of Benin’s palace.

In a statement on Tuesday, signed by the Council’s Secretary, Frank Irabor, the traditional institution described the March 6 visit as a serious breach of palace protocol and a desecration of its sacred grounds.

Peller, who is currently on a nationwide tour, was reportedly received by some palace officials during the visit.

The Council said this amounted to a violation of centuries-old traditions that govern access to the royal precincts.

“The Palace is not a public venue for casual content creation; it is the ancient and spiritual seat of the Oba of Benin, safeguarded by longstanding customs and sacred protocols,” the statement read.

Irabor disclosed that a preliminary investigation has already been conducted, resulting in disciplinary action against palace staff and chiefs who facilitated the intrusion.

A chief implicated in the matter has been suspended indefinitely, while a palace staff member, Mr. Omuemu, was taken into custody by the Nigeria Police Force and charged with causing a breach of peace and abetting unauthorized entry.

“The Council also confirms that a Queen involved in the incident is facing disciplinary proceedings, which could lead to her removal from the Palace,” Irabor added.

The Council said Peller has been invited to explain his actions before a committee of chiefs but has yet to comply.

He has been directed to appear immediately and issue a formal written apology, with the Council warning that legal action could follow if he fails to respond.

“The Benin Traditional Council remains committed to protecting our sacred traditions.

While there may be attempts to undermine our institutions, such actions will not go unaddressed,” the statement concluded.
