A 43-year-old staff member of the National Youth Service Corps, Abbas Olalekan, was on Monday arraigned before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Abeokuta, Ogun State, over alleged conspiracy and attempt to procure abortion.

Olalekan, said to reside in the Mosafueto area of Oke-Ata, Abeokuta, is facing a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and unlawful attempt to procure abortion through the supply of drugs.

The prosecution counsel, Inspector Lawrence Olu-Balogun, told the court that the alleged offences were committed between January and March in the Ikereku area of Laderin, Abeokuta.

He alleged that the defendant conspired with persons still at large to commit a felony, namely abortion.

Olu-Balogun further informed the court that Olalekan allegedly attempted to terminate a pregnancy by supplying drugs to a woman, who has since died.

According to the prosecutor, the defendant was romantically involved with the deceased, a corps member serving in Abeokuta, and was responsible for her pregnancy.

He added that the drugs allegedly administered to terminate the pregnancy led to the woman’s death.

The prosecutor noted that the offences contravene Sections 516 and 230 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
