The Ogun State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the alleged indecent assault of an eight-month-old baby at a private school in the state.

Findings indicated that the incident occurred on Wednesday, March 18, within the school premises where the child’s mother, Gloria Umukoro, works.

Umukoro explained that the school had closed early for revision week, but she remained behind to prepare examination materials.

She said the baby, clad in a diaper, was initially with the school principal before being returned about 30 minutes later by the school director, identified as Korede Afuye.

Recounting the sequence of events, the mother said the principal later placed the child on the floor due to restlessness before briefly leaving for the office, while another colleague also stepped out, leaving her alone with the infant.

Umukoro stated that she initially noticed moisture around the child’s leg and assumed it was urine.

However, she became alarmed minutes later after picking up the baby and discovering bleeding.

According to her, a colleague who is a nurse examined the child and confirmed that the bleeding originated from the anus, with visible bruises in the area.

The distraught mother alleged that the school director was the last person to handle the baby before the injuries were noticed.

She said she confronted him to explain what transpired but could not ascertain how the injuries occurred within such a short time.

Umukoro added that although the school management appealed for calm, she insisted on reporting the matter to the authorities due to the severity of the situation.

The case was subsequently reported to the police.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command said the matter had been escalated to the State Criminal Investigation Department for detailed inquiry.

“The case involving the alleged indecent assault of an eight-month-old baby was reported on March 18 and has been transferred to the SCID, specifically the Gender Unit, for further investigation. The identity of the child is being protected,” the police spokesperson said.

The command added that efforts were ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.
