Residents of Ogbagi-Akoko in Ondo State were thrown into panic on Thursday after a suspected phone thief allegedly attacked the town’s traditional ruler, Oba Victor Adetona Ojo.

The incident, which occurred around 11am, reportedly left the monarch injured and sparked outrage across the community.

Eyewitnesses said the suspect, identified as Tope Adelani, allegedly assaulted the royal father during a confrontation over a missing mobile phone within the palace premises.

Sources close to the palace disclosed that Adelani, said to be a familiar face around the palace, had earlier gained access to the premises and allegedly made away with the monarch’s phone unnoticed.

He was, however, said to have returned shortly afterwards, where he was confronted by the monarch over the alleged theft.

In the ensuing exchange, the suspect reportedly turned violent and attacked the traditional ruler, inflicting injuries on him.

Family members of the monarch who attempted to intervene were also said to have been assaulted during the scuffle.

The development caused confusion within the palace, as attendants and visitors struggled to bring the situation under control.

The monarch was subsequently rushed to a private hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

The suspect was later subdued and handed over to the police.

The attack has since drawn widespread condemnation from residents and community groups, who described it as a desecration of the traditional institution.

The Ogbagi Youth Assembly, in a statement, denounced the incident and expressed solidarity with the monarch.

The group said, “We stand firmly with Kabiyesi, Oba Victor Adetona Ojo, and strongly condemn this act. It is not only an attack on the monarch but also on the values and heritage of our people.”

The youth body also urged residents, particularly youths, to remain calm and refrain from any form of retaliation, stressing the need to allow law enforcement agencies to handle the matter.

It further called for improved security measures within the palace to prevent a recurrence.

Police sources confirmed that the suspect is in custody, adding that investigations are ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

As of the time of filing this report, the monarch had yet to speak on the attack, but sources indicated that he was in stable condition and responding to treatment.

Residents have, however, called on authorities to ensure that justice is served promptly.
