Women stop DisCo officials from cutting power supply

A group of women has prevented officials of an electricity distribution company from disconnecting their power supply, as captured in a viral video that surfaced on Friday.

In the footage, the women, who spoke in Yoruba, confronted the officials over what they described as prolonged lack of electricity in their community, accusing the company of attempting to cut supply despite months of blackout.

They lamented that they had not received power for about three months, questioning the rationale behind the planned disconnection.

“We have not had electricity, yet you want to disconnect us? For three months, there has been no power. We now sleep outside,” one of the women said.

The women were seen forming a barrier around a ladder brought by the officials, preventing them from accessing a pole to carry out the disconnection.

Tension briefly escalated when one of the officials allegedly tried to push a woman aside, prompting others to rally around her in protest.

The incident has since generated mixed reactions on social media, with several Nigerians commending the women for resisting what they perceived as unfair treatment amid persistent power outages.

In another related video, a man was also seen confronting distribution company officials over a similar attempt to disconnect electricity.

Speaking angrily in Yoruba, he decried the situation, noting that there was neither power supply nor financial means, yet disconnection was still being enforced.

The development comes amid worsening electricity shortages across the country.

Recently, the Minister of Power apologised to Nigerians over the decline in supply and assured that efforts were underway to improve the situation within two weeks.
