Backing Tinubu not anti-party, says Fayose at PDP convention

A former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has said his support for President Bola Tinubu does not constitute anti-party activity despite his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Fayose made the remarks on Sunday while speaking at the party’s national convention in Abuja, stressing that national interest should take precedence over partisan considerations.

According to him, political differences are a normal feature of democratic practice and should not be misconstrued as disloyalty.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us. You are first from Ekiti before becoming a member of any political party. All former governors are supporting the incumbent governor,” he said.

The ex-governor also drew parallels with global politics to justify his stance, noting that divergent positions among political actors are not unusual.

Citing examples, he referenced former United States President Barack Obama and former President Donald Trump, arguing that differences in political alignment have not led to sanctions against them.

Fayose further maintained that leadership choices should be guided by competence rather than party affiliation, insisting that Nigerians must prioritise capacity in governance.

“We should not insist that a candidate must be supported simply because he belongs to our party when it is clear such a person lacks the required ability,” he added.
