Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar has officially resigned as Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs to pursue his ambition of becoming the governor of Bauchi State.

The ministry confirmed his resignation on Monday through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, who said: “The resignation of the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs is confirmed.”

Tuggar, a native of Udubo in Gamawa Local Government Area, had previously contested for the governorship position. His Special Adviser on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir, had earlier disclosed the minister’s political plans, stating that Tuggar “is interested and aspires to run for the governorship seat of Bauchi State.”

When asked about the timing of his resignation, Abdulkadir noted that Tuggar would follow the Independent National Electoral Commission’s guidelines, adding: “There is a timetable released by INEC that stipulates all the rules and regulations for running; he will adhere to this.”

PUNCH Online had earlier reported that Tuggar was among four ministers in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet expected to step down to pursue political offices ahead of the 2027 elections.
