The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested a 400-level student of private and property law at the University of Abuja, Goodluck Monday, over the alleged rape of a 100-level female student.

The victim, aged 21, was said to have encountered the suspect at the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, where he reportedly presented himself as the chairman of the institution’s NELFUND committee.

A fellow student familiar with the incident told our correspondent that the suspect, described as appearing much older, later exchanged contact details with the victim after she approached him regarding a friend’s NELFUND application.

The source said the suspect subsequently scheduled a meeting and asked the victim to choose a location between Giri and Gwagwalada. She reportedly opted for Giri due to its proximity to her residence, unaware it was the suspect’s home.

According to the account, the victim accompanied the suspect and another individual into the house but later attempted to leave. However, she was allegedly prevented from doing so.

The source added that the incident occurred late at night, with the victim said to have expressed fear as the suspect allegedly reassured her of her safety while showing identification.

It was further alleged that the suspect made advances towards her, which she rejected, before becoming aggressive.

The student claimed the suspect overpowered the victim despite her resistance and cries for help.

The Law Students’ Association of Nigeria, University of Abuja chapter, in a memorandum dated March 28, 2026, confirmed it had been notified of the allegation involving one of its members and a non-member female student.

The association stated that it had reached out to the complainant, who agreed to submit a formal written statement to assist ongoing inquiries.

Another student disclosed that operatives from the Gwagwalada Police Division apprehended the suspect in the early hours of Monday, noting that the development had eased tension within the university community.

According to the source, there had been growing concerns among students, with similar claims reportedly circulating against the suspect.

In an audio message obtained by our correspondent and allegedly sent to the victim after the incident, the suspect questioned why his contact details had been shared with individuals who later threatened him.

He maintained that he had offered assistance to the victim and denied any wrongdoing.

In a separate message reportedly addressed to members of his campaign team, the suspect suggested that the allegation might be connected to his political aspirations.

When contacted, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the arrest and stated that investigations were ongoing.
