The All Progressives Congress has resumed its electronic membership registration nationwide amid heightened political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This came as a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, led by Tanimu Turaki and backed by Seyi Makinde, announced that it had registered about 4.2 million members through its ongoing exercise.
In a statement on Wednesday, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, confirmed the resumption of the party’s e-registration across wards and designated centres nationwide.
He urged existing members to update their records, while encouraging new entrants to enlist, noting that only individuals aged 18 and above with a valid National Identification Number would be eligible.
Morka explained that the digital registration was aimed at strengthening the party’s database, improving record accuracy, and enhancing internal administrative efficiency and democratic processes.
Meanwhile, the Turaki-led PDP faction said its membership drive had recorded significant turnout despite time constraints.
The faction’s spokesman, Ini Ememobong, told journalists that data from the party’s portal showed that 4,264,675 members were registered as of midnight on March 31, 2026.
He said the exercise, though initially scheduled to last three weeks, was successfully executed through the mobilisation of volunteers and extensive outreach across both rural and urban communities.
Ememobong maintained that the figure reflected only a portion of the party’s support base, adding that many loyal members remained unregistered.
He described the turnout as a demonstration of continued confidence in the PDP despite internal challenges, stressing that the exercise showed that defections were largely among politicians rather than the electorate.
Providing a breakdown of the data, he said the average registration per polling unit stood at 24 members, while each of the 8,809 wards recorded an average of 484 members.
He added that male registrants, numbering 2,336,069, slightly outpaced female members, who stood at 1,928,606.
According to him, youths aged between 18 and 40 accounted for 40.3 per cent of registrations, followed by those aged 41 to 60 at 30.7 per cent, while persons aged 61 and above made up 28.9 per cent.
Geographically, the South-West led with 953,954 members, followed by the South-South with 917,652 and the North-Central with 757,502.
The North-West recorded 754,935 members, the North-East 646,305, while the South-East had 234,327.
State-by-state data showed Kaduna topping the chart with 408,915 registrations, followed by Edo with 378,033 and Oyo with 368,204. Ogun and Kano recorded 316,311 and 275,786 members respectively.
The Makinde-backed faction is currently awaiting a verdict from the Supreme Court over the leadership crisis rocking the party, following earlier rulings by lower courts nullifying its November 2025 convention held in Ibadan.
However, a rival faction loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, conducted a separate convention on March 29, 2026, which produced Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu as national chairman and national secretary, respectively.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission has extended the deadline for the submission of electronic membership registers by political parties to May 10, 2026, from the earlier date of April 21.
The extension, according to the commission, is to ensure compliance with the 21-day statutory provision stipulated under Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act 2026.
