A housewife in Sokoto State has allegedly poured hot oil on her husband, Bello Abubakar, following accusations that he was speaking with another woman on the phone.

The incident occurred in the Yar Gabas area of Sokoto metropolis.

Abubakar, who denied the allegation, maintained that he was not involved in any inappropriate relationship, attributing his wife’s action to what he described as a recurring mental or spiritual condition she had been battling.

Recounting his ordeal, the victim said the attack happened shortly after he returned from the mosque.

“I went to the mosque for Subhi prayer and slept there afterwards. I woke up around 8am and returned home, where I met my wife crying. When I asked what the problem was, she didn’t respond,” he said.

He explained that he later performed ablution and began reciting the Qur’an before preparing to leave for work when his wife asked him to wait.

According to him, while he was lying on the bed, she entered the room with a cup containing what he thought was harmless liquid.

“I didn’t suspect anything because whenever her condition relapses, she usually holds a cup to pray over water. Suddenly, she poured the hot substance on my private part, and I screamed. My hand was also burnt when I tried to check myself,” he added.

Abubakar said he sustained serious burns but is currently receiving treatment at a specialist hospital in Sokoto and is responding to care.

A senior brother to the victim, Tasiu Abubakar, said the couple had lived peacefully prior to the incident but alleged that the woman’s mother had earlier opposed the marriage, suggesting possible external influence.

He added that both families had opted for reconciliation and would not pursue legal action over the incident.

Efforts to reach the wife and her relatives for comments were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

When contacted, the Sokoto State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufai, said he would look into the matter but had yet to provide further details.
