Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have launched an investigation after a man was reportedly caught attempting to poison a stream that serves as the main drinking water source for residents of Aponmu-Lona in Idanre Local Government Area.
The suspect, identified as Philips Odefila, was allegedly apprehended by vigilant community members and promptly handed over to the police.
Two additional accomplices were reportedly arrested during subsequent investigations.
Chief Babalola Bolujare, the Olu of Aponmu-Lona, told reporters on Friday that the incident unfolded amid ongoing tensions with armed hoodlums who recently invaded the community, destroying cocoa plantations and other crops.
The community had earlier petitioned the Inspector General of Police and the Department of State Security Service (DSS) over the attack.
Bolujare said, “While investigations into the invasion are ongoing, we were confronted with a more sinister threat—poisoning of our drinking water. Fortunately, the culprit was caught in the act by residents and handed over to the police.
Two others involved have also been arrested. We urge the Inspector General of Police to ensure a thorough investigation and prosecution so this matter is not swept under the carpet.”
The community, through their lawyer, Tobi Ogunleye, has also petitioned the police over a broader land dispute between Akure and Idanre, warning of potential escalation if prompt action is not taken.
The petition, titled “Urgent Call To Avert Looming Communal Warfare Between Akure And Idanre Communities,” urged immediate intervention to prevent lawlessness and destruction of livelihoods.
Police Public Relations Officer Abayomi Jimoh confirmed that the command is investigating the case but declined to specify the total number of suspects in custody.
