Suspected gunmen have killed a 300-level undergraduate in a late-night ambush in Dum Village, Bachi District of Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State, sparking renewed outrage over persistent attacks in the area.
The victim, identified as 29-year-old Badung Sunday Alamba, a student of the Federal University of Education, Pankshin, was reportedly shot dead on Monday night when assailants lying in wait at the village entrance opened fire on him and another resident.
Community sources said the attackers targeted the duo as they approached the village, unleashing gunfire that left Alamba dead on the spot.
His companion, Dachomo Habila, narrowly escaped despite being pursued by the gunmen.
A resident, Dung Elisha, who spoke on the incident, described the killing as heartbreaking, noting that the deceased was the only child of his mother.
Confirming the attack, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, condemned the incident, alleging it was a deliberate assault on defenseless civilians.
He accused the attackers of sustaining a pattern of violence against Berom communities, particularly in Riyom, Barkin Ladi, and Jos South local government areas, warning that the continued bloodshed posed a serious threat to peace in the state.
The latest killing adds to growing concerns over insecurity in Plateau communities, where residents have repeatedly called for urgent intervention by security agencies to halt the spate of deadly attacks.
