Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, on Monday returned to the Kaduna State High Court as hearing resumed in the criminal case filed against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
El-Rufai is standing trial alongside one Amadu Sule over allegations bordering on abuse of office, fraud, intent to defraud, and alleged conferment of undue advantage, among others.
The proceedings, however, briefly drew public attention after the former governor was seen exchanging words with an associate shortly before entering the courtroom, with the conversation centred on the forthcoming national convention of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“So tomorrow is our convention, right?” El-Rufai was heard asking. His associate reportedly responded, “God willing,” in a brief exchange that underscored his continued involvement in party activities despite ongoing legal battles.
The development comes amid heightened political and legal scrutiny surrounding the former governor, who has recently remained active in national political discussions.
Meanwhile, El-Rufai is also facing a separate 10-count charge before the Federal High Court in Kaduna, also instituted by the ICPC, over alleged abuse of office, money laundering, and fraud involving N579.6 million and $1.1 million.
The anti-corruption agency alleges that the funds in question were improperly handled during his tenure as governor.
A bail application in the matter has been fixed for April 14, setting the stage for another key moment in the unfolding legal battle.
Details of the proceedings are still being expected.
