A Jos Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a 23-year-old labourer, Shuiabu Abubakar, to 30 months imprisonment for breaking into a shop and stealing wrappers and other clothing materials valued at N158,000.

The convict, who was arraigned on charges bordering on trespass, theft and malicious damage, pleaded guilty to the offences.

Delivering judgment, Magistrate Hannatu Ashom handed Abubakar a 30-month jail term but gave him an option of a N180,000 fine.

Earlier, the prosecuting counsel, Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the matter was reported at the Nassarawa Gwong Police Station by the complainant, Shakira Abdullazeez.

Gokwat explained that the defendant unlawfully gained access into the complainant’s shop and carted away Ankara wrappers and several clothing materials.

The prosecutor further disclosed that some of the stolen items were recovered from the defendant during police investigation.

According to him, the offences committed by the convict contravened the relevant provisions of the Plateau State Penal Code Law.
