The Lagos state government will today auction 43 ceased cars, bikes and tricycles awarded to the State by the Lagos State Special Offences (Mobile) Courts for driving against traffic (one way).

The state environmental and special offences (enforcement) task force will be carrying out the auction today, according to a circular by the agency.

Taofeek Gawat, the Special Assistant on new media to Governor Babajide Sanwolu announced it on Monday via his Twitter handle.

“Obey Traffic Rules in Lagos State …. Especially ONE-WAY …. See what’s happening today,” he tweeted.

Nigerians, reacting to the tweet noted that the punishment was too harsh and called for fines instead.

@olugbenga tweeted “Impounding and auctioning people’s cars is an anti-people policy. It’s like using a sledgehammer to kill a mosquito. Bear in mind that some people are visitors to Lagos where some of these one-way signs lying in obscurity.”

Also supporting the argument for fines, @ifeanyi81 tweeted, “A huge fine will be better and not auctioning of cars. Also, LASG should do something about these trucks, tankers, containers that constantly block the road, stay all day and make things miserable.”

Some called for more sanctions against commercial vehicles who they said are notorious for traffic offences.

@tobbyceaster, “Of 44 vehicles, I can only pick out about 4 Danfo buses. That is 9%. Knowing well that Danfo buses are the kings of traffic violations in Lagos state. The head of @followlastma caught a policeman driving one way in a Danfo bus. Why was the bus not immediately impounded?.”
