House of Representative aspirant, Mr. Olumbe Akinkugbe, said it was critical for Nigeria to build a strong digital economy in other to create meaningful opportunities for young Nigerians. He said this while delivering an address at the Ondo Kingdom Youth Digital Empowerment Summit which was held yesterday in Ondo town.

The former Chairman of Ondo SITA stated that it was critical for both the state and federal government to invest in STEM education and empower young people with the skills to be relevant in the digital economy. He said, “that is why during my time as Chairman of the Ondo State Information Technology Agency, we trained close to 3000 people across the three senatorial zones with ICT skills through our Digital Village Project.”

Olumbe also pointed to his support and contributions to the Nigeria Startup Bill because he considered it critical for creating opportunities for young people. “The reason why a key part of my legislative agenda is to promote STEM education is that the future is no longer in oil but in the skills and capabilities of young people. That is why it is important to prepare them for that future. It is also for this reason that I contributed to the creation of the Nigeria Startup Bill because of its potential to turn around the fortunes of many young Nigerians by making Nigeria the number one destination for tech investments.
