2023: No room for vote buyers during elections, says EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said it will go after anyone who buys the votes from the electorate to compromise the 2023 general election.

EFCC Chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa said this while addressing reporters after defending the agency’s 2023 budget before the Senate Committee on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes.

The chairman said the commission would collaborate with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that Nigerians, especially the politicians, comply with the Electoral Act.

Bawa said: “The Electoral Act has already made provisions for what is financially acceptable in campaign financing, and I think that is the law of the land.

“Nigerians are law-abiding and the EFCC is working towards ensuring that all of that is complied with by all Nigerians and politicians. We are working with INEC and other stakeholders to ensure that happens.

“We will continue to do what we have to do. We are trying to be sure that illegitimate funds are not finding their way into our own electoral processes.”
