Former NBA Chair threatens to sue Newspapers over defamatory publication

Former Chairman Nigerian Bar Association, Akure Branch, Rotimi Olorunfemi has threatened to sue Our Heritage Reporters and Sahara Reporters for One billion Naira each over defamatory comments publication.

The news outlets had in a publication dated March 10, 2023 with the headline, “Just In: EFCC arrests House of Reps-Elect, for N3billion fraud, hours after collecting his certificate of return.”, accused the lawyer of confessing to the crime.

In a statement issued through his lawyer, Chief Anthony A. Adeniyi SAN, Olorunfemi said the publication was done without any clear confirmation, terming the publication as “false and reckless”.

Olorunfemi denied committing the alleged fraud of N3billion or any amount whatsoever and also denied confessing to the alleged crime or any other crime whatsoever.

Subsequently, Olorunfemi is demanding a retraction and an apology for the publication from Our Heritage Reporters and Sahara Reporters and also a Payment of the sum of One Billion Naira for the damage done to his person and career.

The statement reads in part “The retraction and apology shall also be given viral publicity by repeating publishing same for Seven (7) consecutive days.

In addition, our Client demands that the above-written retraction and apology shall be published by way of full-page paid advertisement in two national dailies, viz: The Punch and The Daily Independent Newspapers within fourteen (14) days of the receipt of this letter by you.

In the possible event that you do not meet the demands of our Client, we shall proceed, in consonance with our Client’s standing instructions to ensure that the full weight of the law is brought to bear on all persons engaged by you and your stable in the false publications against our Client.”
