The Ondo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has vowed that it will continue to defend right of media professionals in the state while doing their statutory duties.

In a Press Statement issued to felicitate journalists on the occasion of the 2024 World Press Freedom Day, the NUJ Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite and the State Secretary, Olaoluwa Meshack charged members to always uphold the ethics of the profession especially as preparations for the 2024 governorship election in the state.

The day was enshrined under Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights to raise awareness about the importance of the freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression.

The union reminds government at all levels to see and accept members of the press family as integral part of the nation’s democracy and therefore accord them the dignity they deserve while performing their official duties.

We also use the occasion of the 2024 World Press Freedom Day to remind security agencies that the press remains partners-in-progress in the quest for peace, security and development of our great nation, Nigeria, and therefore they should strive to give them the needed protection in the course of their duties.

NUJ, Ondo State Council also wishes to remind journalists in the state to uphold the dignity and ethics of the pen profession by carrying out their duties without intimidation or bias, and always be patriotic in their reportage.

We also enjoin media organizations and owners to prioritize the welfare of their staff through regular payment of their salaries and emoluments, and as well provide modern working tools to enhance their performance.

We congratulate our members across the state and wish them happy “World Press Freedom Day”.
