Protests have broken out in parts of Lagos State on Wednesday on the June 12 Democracy Day, against hunger and the economic hardship imposed on Nigerians by the Bola Tinubu administration.

Protesters were seen at Ikeja Underbridge singing solidarity songs while displaying placards and banners with several inscriptions against the government and the economic challenges facing the country, while also demanding the reversal of harsh policies.

‘President Tinubu, let the poor breathe,’ ‘For another general strike with mass protest now,’ ‘Payment of living wage to all Nigerian workers now,” were among various inscriptions the protesters displayed.

Notable among the protesters are the Take It Back Movement, the Education Rights Campaign, Coalition for Revolution and the Socialist Workers League, among others.

While there were no reports of violence at the venue as of the time this report was filed, officers of the Nigeria Police Force and that of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps were present at the protest venue to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

The State Security Services and the police earlier warned protesters that violence, destruction of property and infringement on other citizens’ rights to movement would not be tolerated.
