Restore subsidy, save Nigeria – Peter Oboh appeals to Tinubu

The ex-Commonwealth, British and WBA boxing champion, Peter Oboh, has said that although President Bola Tinubu’s speech today was full of positives, restoration of fuel subsidy is key to restoring faith in the Federal Government and saving Nigeria.

Oboh said ìf subsidy is restored, the economy would be positively affected as it revolves around the oil and gas sector.

Recall that Tinubu addressed the nation today, following days of protest against hunger and hardship.

Reacting, Oboh said he listened to the President’s speech and was convinced that he meant well for the betterment of the country.

However, he said, the removal of subsidy greatly contributed to the country’s current economic instability, which led to the widespread demonstrations by youths.

Oboh, the pugilist-turned cleric, noted that even if such a policy was to be considered, it should be implemented gradually.

His words: “Yes, his speech sounds very well and fantastic. But the truth is the people are too hungry and angry to buy it.

“I think it would have been easier to restore fuel subsidy so that the prices of goods in Nigeria will fall. And only such announcement would have made a great impact. Even the roundtable talk with union leaders will not be necessary.

“Note this; I went to the United Kingdom, UK, as soon as the fuel subsidy was taken out. I came back almost a year later and almost everyone I know had lost weight.

“The weight loss was not from fasting or dieting or from working out. The sad truth is it was from hunger. Mr. President, I plead with you, please save Nigerians from hunger, restore subsidy. “(Vanguard)
