The Ogun State Police Command said it had commenced investigation into an alleged assassination attempt on one Adebowale Emmanuel, a chief in the Iredo Community of Lagos State, in connection with a kingship dispute.
Spokesperson of the State Police command, SP Omolola Odutola, who disclosed this in a statement in Abeokuta, said the victim was travelling from Ijebu Ode to Ikorodu via the Ijebu-Ode-Epe expressway on Monday when some hoodlums, suspected to be assassins allegedly attempted to take his life.
Odutola noted that several bullets tore through the victim’s vehicles during the attack.
The statement titled, “Attempted assassination over a kingship tussle” reads, “an attempted assassination related to a dispute over kingship was reported on August 12, 2024. One Adebowale Kayode Emmanuel Igbooye a Chief of Iredo community in Lagos State, raised an alarm that while traveling from Ijebu Ode to Ikorodu via the Ijebu Ode/Epe Expressway, he encountered a suspicious Toyota Camry car marked “Oriwu One” trailing and following him, and later double crossed him, forcefully taking his right of way”.
“As soon as he became aware that his life was in danger, he managed to scamper for safety, manoeuvred the vehicle, and continued driving on”.
“His narration described that the suspects gave him a hot chase until he hid himself at Eredo Junction in Lagos State”.
“According to the complainant, he said he discovered another Lexus sport car, speeding towards his car, but that he changed his route towards Ijebu Ode, thereby he narrowly escaped, despite hearing gun shots aimed at his car by an unknown assailants near Itawo Community Junction in Ogun State, prompting him to flee to Ijebu-Ode for safety, abandoning his vehicle mid way on the highway”.
“While stating his ordeal to the Divisional Police Officer, he fingered one Barr. Wasiu Musa Adebamowo from Igbooye, Lagos State, threatened his life and expected worse life threats”.
“Further investigation revealed a power scuffle over who would be next king within the ruling family over the coronation of a new king, even though the current king, despite being of an advanced age is well and alive”.
“Detectives in line with their duty have visited the scene to put the community under control to avoid any form of escalation or senseless killings”.
“The car sprayed by bullets has been recovered to the police station as preliminary investigations have commenced to the ends of ensuring no life is lost”.
