The police in Lagos on Monday arraigned two estate agents, Lukman Akande and Justice Odion, before the Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged N1.5 million fraud.

The defendants- Akande, 43, and Odion, 34, whose addresses were not provided, are standing trial on a two-count charge of fraud and breach of the peace.

The prosecutor, Insp Ayodele Adeosun, told the court that‎ the defendants committed the offences on July 26, at 4:00.p.m., at Power Line Atunshe Bus Stop, Era Road, Ijanikin area, Lagos.

The prosecutor stated that the defendants fraudulently obtained N1.5 million from one Yomi Obafusu in the guise of hiring an unused viewing centre.

He said the defendants hired the centre but failed to remit the money to the property owner.

“The defendants conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by refusing to remit the proceeds of the centre to the owner.

“The offences contravene Sections 168 and 315 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015,” he said.

‎However, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge.

‎The chief magistrate, Patrick Adekomaiya, granted bail the defendants  N500,000 each with two sureties each in like sum.‎

He ordered that one of the sureties be a community leader with two years of evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Mr Adekomaiya adjourned the case until September 10 for mention.
