Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Abayomi Oladipo, has issued a warning to residents of the state, urging them not to participate in the planned nationwide protest scheduled for October 1, Nigeria’s Independence Day.

This warning follows the insistence of protest organisers, who are demonstrating against the current economic challenges, that the protest will go ahead as planned. One of the key organisers, Omoyele Sowore, has branded the protest “FearlessInOctober,” aimed at opposing the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement released on Monday, Ondo State Police spokesperson Funmilayo Odunlami quoted Mr. Oladipo, stating that officers have been deployed to ensure that no protest disrupts the Independence Day celebrations.

The police commissioner added that the force will also be present to participate in the anniversary’s commemorative parade as part of the celebrations.

“The CP urges the good people of the state to continue to be patriotic and not join any organisation or group that may want to disrupt the historical celebration of our dear nation.

“In view of the celebration, the Commissioner of Police has ordered that all security apparatus of the police be activated to ensure the celebration is hitch-free and no untoward incident is recorded,” the police’s statement read.

The Commissioner of Police also called on parents and guardians to advise their children and wards against engaging in any activities that could disrupt public order.

He emphasized the police command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, assuring that security measures have been put in place to apprehend anyone found violating the law during the Independence Day celebrations.
