Chief of Army Staff Lagbaja reportedly unwell; Military Generals seek position

Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, is reportedly facing undisclosed health issues, prompting speculation and competition among top military officers for his position.

Sources have informed SaharaReporters that Lagbaja’s health concerns have raised questions about his future in office.

He was appointed by President Bola Tinubu in June 2023 and is the 27th Chief of Army Staff, succeeding Faruk Yahaya on June 23, 2023.

The Chief of Army Staff holds a vital role in the Nigerian military, reporting to the Chief of Defence Staff, who answers to the Defence Minister and the President.

Recent developments indicate that Lagbaja was taken abroad for medical treatment, with sources describing his condition as “strange.”

“The Chief of Army Staff has not been seen at the Army headquarters or any military functions for the past three weeks. I can confirm that he is seriously ill and was moved out of the country for treatment,” one source stated.

Concerns about his absence were echoed by a Major, who noted, “It’s unusual for him not to attend significant events, such as the October 1 Independence Day parade. I inquired about his whereabouts and was told he was out of the country.”

Additionally, there are reports that the 2024 promotion list for soldiers, completed weeks ago, remains unsigned by Lagbaja, leading to dissatisfaction among officers awaiting promotion.

As multiple sources indicate that Lagbaja’s health has worsened, there are fears for his condition. “His health is seriously deteriorating, and he is currently bedridden. We are praying for his quick recovery,” one insider revealed.

The situation has ignited intense lobbying among senior military officers vying to succeed Lagbaja.

Major Generals are reportedly campaigning discreetly, seeking support from influential figures, including politicians and military leaders, to secure the position.

Should Lagbaja’s health continue to decline, the competition for his replacement is expected to intensify. His extensive military background includes key roles, such as General Officer Commanding at Headquarters 82 Division and Headquarters 1 Division.

If he is unable to recover from his health challenges, the incoming Chief of Army Staff will face considerable obstacles in leading the Nigerian Army. “Given the nature of Lagbaja’s illness, no President would allow him to continue in the position, even if he were discharged from the hospital. Significant lobbying for his replacement is currently taking place among senior Army officers,” a source remarked.

Army spokesperson Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, in response to the rumors, emphasized that Lagbaja was on leave, having worked diligently for the country.

He remarked, “If the Chief of Army Staff travels abroad after years of service, is it wrong for him to take a break? Everyone deserves time off, including military personnel.”

He further stressed that medical check-ups should not be stigmatized, stating, “It’s normal for anyone to seek medical attention, and there’s no need for undue concern over a routine check-up.”

In a related statement, human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju expressed his wishes for Lagbaja’s speedy recovery, emphasizing the need for empathy during this time.

“I call for understanding towards the army chief and his family, and I hope for a smooth transition of duties within the Nigerian Army during his recovery.”
