Ondo 2024: Police warn against spread of misinformation, assure of peaceful poll

As Ondo State gears up for the November 16 off-cycle gubernatorial election, the police have issued a stern warning to those spreading fake news and causing unrest.

In a statement released by the police spokesperson, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the force emphasized that unverified information could disrupt the peace and stability of the state during the election period.

“The police command urges the public to verify information before sharing, as constructive communication is vital for maintaining a peaceful atmosphere during this critical time in the state’s history,” the statement read.

The police highlighted two recent incidents of misinformation, including an old video of flooding in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area, being recirculated with the intent to incite unrest. The spread of such misleading content, they warned, undermines democracy and threatens to disrupt a fair political process.

“These actions not only mislead the public but also pose serious risks during this crucial election period. Misinformation can erode trust, provoke violence, endanger public safety, and compromise the democratic process—ultimately denying citizens a fair opportunity to exercise their civic rights,” the police cautioned.

In another instance, a false report circulated about a corpse found with amputated fingers in Ajowa-Akoko. The divisional police officer who investigated the claim confirmed it to be untrue.

The police called on the public to critically assess the information they come across and resist those attempting to exploit the situation for personal gain.

Commissioner of Police, CP Abayomi Oladipo Peter, assured residents that the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, are fully prepared to ensure a free, fair, and secure election. He also warned that any individuals or groups attempting to disrupt the peace will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

A total of 18 political parties have put forward candidates for the upcoming election.
