AIFF 2024 opens with Wole Soyinka’s biopic

‘Ebrohime Road: Museum of Memories’, a documentary film about the eponymous location at the University of Ibadan, where Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka lived and worked before he was arrested in 1967, after visiting the Biafran warlord Ojukwu during the Nigerian Civil War, will be in the spotlight again as it opens the 21st edition of the prestigious Abuja International Film Festival,AIFF,.

The festival opens on Monday, October 28, and will run till Friday, November 1, at the Silverbird Galleria in Abuja.

The documentary, written, produced and directed by Kola Tubosun, premiered in July this year, and shot by Tunde Kelani. It featured different accounts of Wole Soyinka’s time at the University of Ibadan including his challenges with being promoted to Professorship and what he did when he was denied the promotion.

This year, the festival received an overwhelming 1,254 film submissions from 65 countries across 18 genres, reflecting a global tapestry of storytelling and creativity. From this impressive selection, 65 nominees have been chosen to showcase the best in contemporary filmmaking.

Under the visionary guidance of Festival Director Temitope Duker, the festival’s theme “Bridging cultures through cinemas” embodies a commitment to showcasing diverse narratives that transcend geographic boundaries and celebrate the rich tapestry of global cinema.

Duker assures attendees of an engaging and enlightening festival experience that will inspire and connect audiences from all walks of life. In addition to the exceptional film screenings, the festival will also host thought-provoking panel discussions on vital industry topics such as distribution, investment, and film financing.

Industry experts and visionaries will share their experiences and insights, providing attendees with a unique opportunity to gain invaluable knowledge about the business side of filmmaking.
