The FCT Police Command has commenced interrogation of a member of the House of Representatives, Alexander Ikwegh, for allegedly assaulting a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.

The FCT police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement on Monday on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu.

Mr Ikwegh, representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency of Abia State, allegedly assaulted the driver, who asked him to come collect his package from his (Bolt driver’s) car instead of taking the package to the lawmaker’s house.

A viral video showed the altercation between the two. Mr Ikwegh was seen punching and slapping the driver while threatening to lock him up in his generator house and make him “disappear.”

The police said the Maitama Division received the report of the incident, which happened on Sunday at a residence on Zamfara Crescent, Abuja.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwegh when a dispute arose concerning the method of delivery. During this altercation, Mr Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted,” the police said.

The police also expressed dissatisfaction that the lawmaker disregarded and dismissed the ability of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to bring him to book for the assault.

“The FCT Police Command expresses grave concern over Hon. Ikwegh’s dismissive attitude toward the office of the Inspector General of Police following the incident.

“After allegedly slapping the victim, he reportedly remarked with contempt, ‘You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,’ demonstrating a troubling disregard for the authority of law enforcement,” the police said.

“Currently, the suspect is at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning.”

The police commissioner has ordered a thorough and impartial investigation into the matter to ensure justice and vowed that appropriate legal action will be taken upon completion of the investigation.
