Abuja Bolt driver apologizes to Abia federal lawmaker over assault incident
Stephen Abuwatseya, the Bolt driver who was assaulted by Abia State lawmaker Rt. Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh has issued a public apology, stating that his “provocative utterances” led to a misunderstanding with the legislator.
In a video released Thursday, Abuwatseya expressed regret for his actions and urged Nigerians to move past the incident.
His words: “Good day, Nigerians. My name is Stephen Abuwatseya. I had a misunderstanding with Rt. Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh a few days ago.
“I actually want to apologize to him for whatever I must have said or done to provoke him to that level of anger.”
He called on Nigerians to embrace unity, adding, “Please, Nigerians, let’s forgive and forget, as it’s even contained in our Lord’s Prayer, that ‘Lord, please forgive us, as we forgive those who trespass against us.’ For there is no justice without forgiveness.”
The incident occurred on October 28, when Ikwechegh assaulted Abuwatseya while the driver was delivering a package to his residence in Abuja.
Video footage showed the lawmaker slapping and verbally abusing the driver, even threatening to make him “disappear from Nigeria.”
Following the incident, Ikwechegh was arraigned at a Magistrate Court in Kuje, Abuja, where he pleaded not guilty to charges of assault.
