Tinubu, PDP’s biggest problem – Segun Sowunmi
Segun Sowunmi, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of aggravating the internal crisis within the opposition party.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Sowunmi attributed the PDP’s challenges to Tinubu’s controversial decision to appoint Nyesom Wike, a PDP member and former Rivers State governor, as a minister without consulting the party’s leadership.
“People may say Wike is the cause of the PDP’s problems, but I would rather blame President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Sowunmi asserted. “He has no business appointing our member into his cabinet without engaging with us first.”
Sowunmi argued that Tinubu’s unilateral action has worsened the PDP’s internal divisions. Comparing Tinubu to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, he noted that Obasanjo sought the party’s approval when forming a government of national unity, a step Tinubu ignored.
“When Obasanjo wanted to form a government of national unity, he consulted with the opposition parties,” Sowunmi explained. “But Tinubu simply appointed one of our members to a strategic position, and now things have become even more complicated.”
He called for Wike’s dismissal from Tinubu’s cabinet as a means of resolving the crisis. “If he wants peace in our party, he should sack Wike and let him return to the PDP,” he suggested.
Despite these issues, Sowunmi dismissed claims that the PDP is on the verge of collapse, emphasizing the party’s resilience in overcoming past challenges.
“A party that survived Obasanjo tearing his membership card, a party that endured Jonathan stepping down, is not about to die,” he declared.
On the ongoing leadership tussle within the PDP, Sowunmi revealed that the party is awaiting a court ruling to determine the way forward. However, he criticized the frequent reliance on legal battles, saying such actions undermine internal dispute resolution.
As a key opposition figure, Sowunmi also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of tarnishing Nigeria’s global image, contrasting it with the PDP’s more mature approach to governance and national integrity.
“We in the PDP understand the importance of protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity and its reputation,” he said.
Sowunmi’s remarks underscore the growing tensions within the PDP and its struggle to adapt in the face of political challenges.
