Two tomato sellers bag six-month jail term for assaulting customer
A Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday sentenced two tomato vendors, Olawunmi Ayoola and Bolanle Yekini, to six months imprisonment, for assaulting a customer.
Ayoola, 42 and Yekini, 45, had on arraignment pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and assault.
The Magistrate, Sanusi Adagun, convicted the women following their plea of guilt.
She sentenced the women to six months imprisonment with an option of fine.
According to her, the first defendant (Ayoola) shall pay the sum of N150,000 while the second defendant will pay N50,000 to the complainant.
She held that the payment should be made within 10 working days from the day of pronouncement of the sentence.
She ruled, “The convicts will risk going to prison, if they did not abide by the order of the court.’’
The magistrate convicted and sentenced the women after the prosecutor, Inspector Reuben Solomon, reviewed the facts of the case.
Mr Solomon told the court that the defendants committed the offences on October 18, at Doyin Bus/Stop Orile Iganmu, Lagos.
He submitted that the tomato vendors assaulted one Ada Ozoemema who wanted to buy tomatoes from them.
According to him, the defendants pounced on Ozoemema and beat her up when she was negotiating the price of tomatoes.
He said the offences contravened Sections 173 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
