Nigeria Witnesses Large-Scale Surrender of Boko Haram, ISWAP Terrorists, Says Army Chief Olufemi Oluyede

Nigeria has seen a significant number of Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists surrender, a development attributed to the Nigerian Army’s continued efforts to counter these insurgents, according to Army Chief Olufemi Oluyede. Speaking at the 2024 COAS Annual Conference in Abuja, Oluyede urged soldiers to strengthen their commitment to protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

Oluyede, emphasizing the army’s focus on upholding national security, assured that the army would continue its relentless pursuit of excellence in safeguarding Nigerians. The conference, which serves as both an assessment of the army’s work over the past year and a planning session for the future, highlights the army’s determination to address security challenges head-on.

“We will remain unwavering in our commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all Nigerians,” Oluyede stated, outlining the army’s approach to confronting terrorism and other security threats. He underscored the importance of developing innovative strategies to combat these issues and the need for continuous operational improvements.

Oluyede further called on operational commanders to engage actively with their troops, ensuring they remain motivated and prepared for any challenges. He also emphasized the importance of leadership that exemplifies resilience, empathy, and commitment to the army’s mission.

The army chief noted the intensification of operations against terrorism, banditry, and other criminal activities across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, particularly in the North-East and North-West regions. He highlighted the ongoing success of operations like HADIN KAI and FASAN YAMMA, which focus on dismantling terrorist groups such as Lakurawa in the North-West.

These operations are supported by enhanced intelligence-gathering, swift special forces deployment, and synchronized air and ground offensives to neutralize threats. Oluyede also pointed out that engaging local communities for information sharing has been critical in fostering cooperation and promoting a unified stance against terrorism.

The Nigerian Army has continued to collaborate with other security agencies to address threats in regions like the North-Central, South-East, and South-South. Ongoing large-scale offensives have disrupted terrorist operations and built local confidence, while the surrender of terrorists and the confiscation of arms indicate significant progress.

Looking ahead, Oluyede pledged to escalate both kinetic and non-kinetic efforts in the coming year to restore peace across the nation, ensuring the continued safety and security of Nigerian citizens.
