Anambra retired directors threaten showdown with Govt over pension

Awka — Retired directors in Anambra State have issued a warning to the state government over the delay in the harmonization and upward review of their pensions.

At a meeting held in Awka, the retired directors set a mid-February 2025 deadline for the government to address their concerns or face a potential showdown

In a communiqué signed by the association’s chairman, Sir Fidelis Ezeike, and secretary, Sir Azuka Okeke, they stated:

“The state government is yet to sign the negotiated new minimum wage salary table that will inform the constitution of a committee to negotiate a new pension table in line with the current economic realities.

“We call on the state government and all supporters of retirees to expedite action in setting up the committee.”

The communiqué further emphasized that if no action is taken by the set deadline, the association would begin writing letters to the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), the government, and other relevant bodies to express their grievances.

The retired directors also expressed disappointment with the NUP for failing to provide them with the constitution governing its operations, despite their status as financial members.

As part of efforts to strengthen their representation, the association unanimously elected Dr. Dan Ifeatu Obele to represent them in the state council of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners. This move aims to ensure members are kept informed about issues affecting their welfare.

The communiqué reiterated the association’s commitment to advocating for the welfare of its members and other retirees, while positioning itself as a subtle pressure group working for the collective good of all retirees.

“We will continue striving for the welfare of our members and ensuring their voices are heard. If no progress is made by mid-February 2025, we will escalate our actions,” the communiqué concluded
