BREAKING: Ex-Kogi Gov, Yahaya Bello Granted N500 Million Bail by FCT High Court
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court has granted bail to former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, with conditions including a ₦500 million bond and two sureties.
Justice Maryann Anenih delivered the ruling on Thursday, overturning an earlier decision on December 10, when the court denied Bello’s initial bail request, citing procedural issues as it was filed before his court appearance.
Following the denial, Bello’s legal team reapplied, and the application was considered during Thursday’s proceedings.
The former governor is facing a 16-count charge of alleged money laundering involving ₦110 billion, alongside two co-defendants. All three pleaded not guilty to the charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
During the hearing, Bello’s counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN), updated the court on ongoing discussions with the EFCC to expedite the trial. He also sought modifications to the bail terms, including expanding the scope of acceptable surety properties within the FCT.
EFCC counsel Olukayode Enitan (SAN) acknowledged the discussions and reiterated the commission’s commitment to a fair trial, leaving the decision on bail conditions to the court.
Justice Anenih approved the bail, citing the bailable nature of the charges. She set the conditions at ₦500 million and three sureties who must own properties in key areas of the FCT, including Maitama, Jabi, and Asokoro.
Additionally, Bello was ordered to surrender his international passport and will remain in Kuje Correctional Centre until all bail conditions are fulfilled.
