In response to recent tragedies caused by crowd-related incidents, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Ondo State, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, has issued new crowd control directives aimed at improving public safety during gatherings. The guidelines are designed to ensure the protection of lives and property while respecting the constitutional right to peaceful assembly.

The directives, outlined in Directive No. 01-1224, are based on the powers vested in the Attorney General under Nigerian laws, including the Constitution of Nigeria and the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Ondo State. Dr. Ajulo emphasized that the new measures prioritize public safety without infringing on citizens’ rights.

The directives include a range of safety protocols for law enforcement and event organizers. These include conducting thorough risk assessments of events, notifying local authorities in advance, and ensuring adequate deployment of security personnel to monitor and maintain order. Law enforcement agencies are also encouraged to use technology, such as drones and CCTV, to track crowd dynamics in real-time.

Dr. Ajulo also highlighted the importance of public awareness campaigns to educate the public on safety measures during gatherings. Additionally, organizers are required to ensure proper medical and emergency preparedness, including the presence of qualified medical teams and ambulances for large events. Other measures include ensuring venue accessibility, providing essentials like drinking water and mobile toilets, and avoiding venues with limited entrances or exits to allow smooth crowd movement.

The Attorney General further stressed the need for enhanced cooperation between event organizers, law enforcement, and local authorities to prevent incidents and ensure smooth coordination. He urged all parties to fully comply with these new measures to avoid legal consequences and contribute to a safer environment for public gatherings.

“These crowd control measures reflect Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to fostering a secure environment for events in Ondo State,” Dr. Ajulo concluded, calling on stakeholders to familiarize themselves with the new regulations.
