Alibaba is father of stand-up comedy in Nigeria – Seyi Law

A discussion has emerged on X regarding the pioneer of stand-up comedy in Nigeria, with some attributing its inception to late Yoruba broadcaster, Gbenga Adeboye.

In response, comedian Seyi Law has intervened to challenge this assertion, asserting that Ali Baba should be recognized as the true father of stand-up comedy in Nigeria.

Seyi Law’s remarks followed a claim by a user who suggested that Gbenga Adeboye was the rightful pioneer of stand-up comedy in Nigeria and potentially in West Africa. Seyi Law refuted this claim, emphasizing that Ali Baba’s influence on the comedy landscape is unparalleled.

He stated that Ali Baba elevated stand-up comedy to both national and international prominence, breaking through regional barriers and sentiments.

Furthermore, Seyi Law underscored Ali Baba’s vital contributions to the business aspects of comedy, noting that he has educated numerous comedians on the necessary structure and professionalism required for success in the field.

Many prominent comedians, including Seyi Law himself, have gained from Ali Baba’s mentorship and material.

To reinforce his argument, Seyi Law cited Ali Baba’s remarkable achievement of performing six hours of original comedy without repetition. While Ali Baba consistently acknowledges the efforts of those who came before him, it is he who has imparted the essential structure and business acumen of comedy. Many successful comedians today have built their careers on Ali Baba’s foundational materials. His ability to deliver six hours of original content without redundancy is a testament to his mastery, earning him the title of king in the industry.

He said: “On this one, you are wrong. Alibaba brought national and international appeal to standup comedy beyond regional sentiments. Alibaba would always give reference to the hard work of those before him, but the structure and the business aspects of comedy were taught by Alibaba. Many big names today rode on Alibaba’s materials. Alibaba once did 6 hours of comedy of original materials without repetition. We call him king for a reason.”
