Thirteen people have tragically lost their lives in a horrific road accident that occurred on Saturday along the Owo-Ikare highway in Ondo State.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo State, Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, confirmed the incident, stating that the crash involved 14 individuals. Only one person survived but sustained serious injuries.

In a statement, Dr. Ibitoye said:
“The Federal Road Safety Corps, Ondo State Sector Command regrets to report a fatal road traffic crash that took place on December 28, 2024, at Abule Panu near Ose Bridge along the Owo-Ikare highway.

“The crash, which occurred at about 10:14 a.m., involved two buses. Thirteen lives were lost, with victims burned beyond recognition, while one person was rescued and taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, for treatment.”

Eyewitness accounts revealed that the accident was caused by a tire burst on a bus traveling from Ikare. The vehicle lost control and collided head-on with another bus carrying fabric from Owo. The impact caused both vehicles to burst into flames.

Emergency responders, including the FRSC, police, and fire services, arrived swiftly at the scene. The deceased victims have been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre morgue in Owo.

The FRSC has urged drivers to prioritize safety by maintaining their vehicles and exercising caution on the road. Passengers are also encouraged to speak up against reckless driving to ensure safer travel for all.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
