The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed allegations circulating on social media, accusing it of using the enforcement of third-party motor insurance as a revenue-generating scheme.
In a statement released on Saturday, February 1, 2025, and signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police clarified that it has no role in issuing third-party insurance policies, contrary to claims made by certain social media influencers and activists.
“The responsibility of securing third-party insurance rests solely with vehicle owners through their insurance providers,” Adejobi stated.
“The police are only tasked with enforcing compliance, which officially commenced today, February 1, 2025, to improve road safety and safeguard the rights of accident victims.”
Adejobi further urged social media users to refrain from spreading false information regarding the policy, warning that misinformation could lead to public confusion and non-compliance with legal requirements.
“Accurate information is crucial to avoid misleading motorists, as misconceptions may result in legal consequences for those who fail to meet insurance obligations,” he added.
The police reiterated their commitment to ensuring road safety through the enforcement of existing laws without any ulterior motives.
