UCH medical students protest 100 days power outage

Medical students at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State, have staged a protest at the office of the Chief Medical Director (CMD) over prolonged power and water shortages in their hostels.

While the demonstration is ongoing, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and UCH CMD, Jesse Otegbayo, are reportedly holding a meeting with key stakeholders in the hospital’s conference room to find a solution to the persistent power outage.

Reports indicate that UCH has been without electricity since October 2024, marking over 100 days of blackout as of Monday.

The protesting students carried placards with messages such as “100+ Days of Darkness: Save UCH,” “Medical School Is Hard Enough – Give Us Light,” and “No Light, No Water.”

Speaking on the issue, former University of Ibadan Students’ Union President, Samson Samuel, and former Speaker, Olamide Omotunde, both of whom are medical students, expressed frustration over the situation.

Samuel stated, “We have held several meetings with the UCH management, yet no action has been taken to restore electricity in our hostels. We will not stop protesting until our demands are met.”

Omotunde added, “On January 26, 2025, we protested at the State and Federal Secretariats in Agodi, Ibadan, hoping for a resolution. However, nothing has changed, which is why we are taking action again after 100 days without power.”
