On Wednesday, a 29-year-old cook, Samira Abubakar, was docked in a Kaduna Chief Magistrates Court for stealing her employer’s gold jewellery worth N4.5 million.
The defendant was arrested for stealing. She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on January 8 at Ungwan Rimi Kaduna.
Mr Leo said the complainant, Ahmed Usman, reported that the defendant, who was his cook, entered his room and stole his family’s gold jewellery valued at N4.5 million.
He said that after stealing the jewellery, the defendant was on the run until she was arrested on February 10.
He said that when the police arrested the defendant, they found some of the stolen jewellery in her possession.
The magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He said the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and submit two recent passport photographs.
He further ordered that the sureties be gainfully employed with evidence of two years of tax payment to the Kaduna government.
He adjourned the case until March 31 for a hearing.
