Public outcry as tech entrepreneur dies in alleged reckless driving incident

The tragic death of Adetunji Opayele, popularly known as Teejay, has ignited widespread outrage, with calls for justice intensifying over claims of negligence and an alleged cover-up.

Teejay, co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of the Nigerian tech startup Bumpa, lost his life in a road accident on March 4 along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Reports indicate that the 32-year-old software engineer was riding his power bike when he was struck by a vehicle allegedly driven by Biola Adams-Odutayo, a healthcare professional.

In response, a petition demanding accountability has been launched on Change.org, urging authorities, including the Inspector-General of Police and Lagos state officials, to ensure justice is served.

The petition alleged that Adams-Odutayo, while driving a car with license plate LND 418 JR, entered the expressway carelessly and collided with Teejay.

Eyewitnesses claim that despite wearing full protective gear, Teejay was left unconscious on the road.

The petition further states that Adams-Odutayo refused to leave her vehicle to assist him, ignoring pleas from bystanders.

A friend accompanying her reportedly dismissed concerns, saying she “did not want blood to stain her car.”

As good Samaritans struggled to get Teejay medical help, he was reportedly rejected at two hospitals before finally being admitted elsewhere. Unfortunately, by the time his family was notified and arrived, Teejay was pronounced dead.

The petition also alleged that after Teejay’s death, Adams-Odutayo requested medical attention for herself, claiming shock, before attempting to leave the hospital.

Though she was later arrested, there are claims that she and her family have boasted about their influence and connections.

Concerns have also been raised about the legal response to the case. Adams-Odutayo was reportedly charged only with reckless driving and granted bail set at N1 million with two sureties, which many believe does not match the gravity of the incident.

Teejay’s loved ones and supporters are demanding stronger legal action, including an upgrade of the charges to manslaughter, an intervention from the Lagos State Ministry of Justice to prevent any alleged cover-up, and assurances that the suspect remains in Nigeria to face due process.

The public is also being urged to come forward with any evidence, such as videos or eyewitness testimonies, to support the case.
