The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of 17 people, including an FRSC emergency rescue operative, in a tragic road accident in Ogun State.

In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, Mohammed extended his condolences to the families of all the victims.

He revealed that the deceased FRSC operative was on duty, responding to the crash when he lost his life.

Mohammed urged motorists to prioritize regular vehicle maintenance and adhere to speed limits to prevent such tragedies in the future.

He blamed the accident on excessive speeding and brake failure.

The fatal crash occurred at 4:00 p.m. in the Gbara area and involved seven vehicles: a white DAF truck (T14007LA), a Toyota Hiace bus (AGL752YC), a Honda saloon car (HET680), a Nissan pickup van (STF10204) belonging to the Nigeria Police, another unidentified white DAF truck, and two Bajaj motorcycles (AGG448Q and PKA214WS).

Eighteen individuals were involved in the incident—12 men, 5 women, and a child.

Only one person survived with injuries, while the remaining 17 (11 men, 5 women, and the child) lost their lives.

Mohammed reiterated the FRSC’s commitment to road safety and expressed concern over the rising number of speed-related crashes.

He called on drivers to be responsible and obey traffic laws, stressing that reckless driving has devastating consequences.

He vowed that the driver responsible for the accident would face legal prosecution, adding that the FRSC would continue to pursue justice for victims and intensify its efforts to promote road safety.

He also urged all stakeholders—motorists, pedestrians, and the public—to join the campaign against speeding and traffic violations.
