Northern support crucial for presidency, says Baba-Ahmed

Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, former spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum and ex-Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Bola Tinubu, has stated that no politician can attain Nigeria’s presidency without the backing of the North.

Speaking in a widely circulated video interview alongside Professor Usman Yusuf, former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Baba-Ahmed emphasized the North’s pivotal role in shaping national leadership.

“No politician can become President of Nigeria without the support of the North,” he asserted, underscoring the region’s significant political influence.

He revealed that the North would soon announce its political direction ahead of the 2027 general elections. “In the next six months, you will hear what the North is going to do.

We are not going to hide it,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed reflected on the longstanding challenges faced by the region, especially during the height of the Boko Haram insurgency.

“We have suffered. We know what hardship means. We want a government that understands our problems and is ready to address them,” he said.

He also cautioned against the marginalization of the North and warned of possible unrest if electoral malpractice persists.

“If they plan to rig the election, they should be careful. It won’t be good for Nigeria,” he warned.

According to him, the North is now more politically aware and determined not to be swayed by empty promises or divisive rhetoric.

“The North is watching. Our elders, our youth, our interest groups — everyone is awake.

We will soon say enough is enough,” he stated.

Baba-Ahmed concluded by stressing that justice and equity must guide Nigeria’s leadership selection if the country is to remain united.

“The North’s stance will significantly influence the 2027 elections.

It’s time politicians started taking us seriously,” he said.
