The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the rescue of a kidnap victim who was abducted on Tuesday in Umuege village, Amawbia, near Awka.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga said the rescue was carried out by operatives from the Central Police Station in Awka after they received intelligence about the abduction.
The officers pursued the suspects and strategically positioned themselves, prompting the kidnappers—who were using an unmarked Sienna vehicle—to abandon the victim in Umunya, along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, and flee the scene.
Ikenga noted that the victim has since been debriefed, and a full investigation has been ordered by the state commissioner of police, Ikioye Orutugu.
The rescue comes just days after the launch of “Operation Udo-Ga-Chi – Zero Kidnapping in Anambra” on April 14, an initiative aimed at improving security for both residents and visitors.
