Saraki shrugs off Delta defections, says PDP will bounce back stronger

Former Senate President and influential leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has dismissed concerns over the recent wave of defections from the party’s Delta State chapter, including the exit of the state governor.

In a statement aimed at reassuring party members, Saraki called on loyalists to remain committed and focus on rebuilding the PDP ahead of upcoming elections.

“There’s no need for panic,” he said. “Those who feel the need to leave the PDP are free to do so.

But for those of us who believe in its core values, this is the time to stay focused and reposition the party as a credible alternative for Nigerians.”

Saraki emphasized the critical role of a vibrant opposition in any democracy, warning that the dominance of a single political party could pose a threat to Nigeria’s pluralistic society.

“Our nation cannot afford to slide into a one-party state.

In a country as diverse as ours, the absence of a strong opposition only breeds despair,” he cautioned.

Reacting to the defection of the party’s former vice-presidential candidate to the ruling party, Saraki described the move as “unprecedented and disappointing,” noting it reflects the broader leadership challenges facing Nigeria’s political class.

Despite recent setbacks, Saraki expressed confidence in the party’s future, stating that the PDP will emerge stronger with a core of loyal and dedicated members rather than a crowd of opportunists.

He also hinted at possible high-profile defections into the PDP from other parties in the near future.

Saraki urged the party’s youth and women to take charge of the party’s revitalization efforts, viewing the current challenges as an opportunity for renewal.

“This is not a defeat—it’s a challenge we are capable of overcoming.

There is still time to regroup and come back stronger,” he said.

He concluded with a rallying call to party members: “Let’s remain united and focused.

This is not the end of the road. The future of the PDP is still very much alive.”
