Former NNPCL chief Mele Kyari denies EFCC arrest rumours

Former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has dismissed reports claiming he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In a statement posted on his X account late Saturday, Kyari described the rumours as a “calculated attempt” to tarnish his reputation.

He confirmed he is currently on a “well-deserved rest” following his removal from office by President Bola Tinubu in April.

“These claims are pure mischief and designed to achieve an unknown agenda,” he said.

“I’ve received numerous calls from concerned friends and family, but I am not in EFCC custody.”

Kyari, who led the NNPCL for nearly six years during his 34-year career with the company, stated that he is ready to respond to any lawful inquiry into his tenure.

He emphasized that he served the institution with integrity and a deep sense of accountability.

“I worked with the fear of God, knowing I will one day account for my actions before both man and Allah,” he said.

He urged the media to verify information before publication, warning that false reports could harm Nigeria’s image and deter potential investors.

Kyari expressed gratitude to those who reached out to him and reaffirmed his willingness to cooperate with authorities if required.
