A Nigerian Army captain and a soldier have been confirmed dead following a midnight attack by Boko Haram insurgents on Izge community in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.

The Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Mohammed Shehu Timta, disclosed the incident during an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday..

He stated that the attack occurred around 1:00 a.m. when the insurgents infiltrated the farming community, firing sporadically.

According to the monarch, the Nigerian Armed Forces, supported by local hunters, vigilantes, and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), swiftly mobilized to repel the terrorists. In the ensuing gun battle, three insurgents were killed.

Security personnel recovered multiple motorcycles, bicycles, an operational vehicle, and a sophisticated rifle from the attackers.

The Emir praised the bravery of the military and the joint local security teams, while also mourning the loss of the two soldiers.

“A captain and a soldier paid the supreme price, but due to the swift and courageous response of the military and local forces, the attack was successfully repelled,” he said.

He further noted that security personnel and community members were still in pursuit of the fleeing terrorists as of the time of the report.

‘As I speak, many of our people are still combing the bushes in search of the attackers,” he added.

The traditional ruler also called on the federal government to take immediate action in addressing the resurgence of attacks in the region, especially as residents prepare for the farming season.

He appealed for enhanced technological support and modern weaponry for security agencies to help end the insurgency.

In his remarks, the Emir commended Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, for his continued support to security forces and efforts to facilitate the resettlement of displaced persons.
